How We Achieved Industry-Leading Code Quality

A standard metric for measuring code quality and performance is defects per KLoC – in other words, how many bugs per thousand lines of code.

For perspective, business software averages up to 10 bugs per KLoC. Consumer software averages much higher. (Learn more about defect density standards here).

By leveraging modern tech, training internally, and improving risk mitigation, we reduced our defect rate from 1.8 to 1.16 bugs per KLoC—an achievement that places us among the highest-quality software organizations in the world.

Our improved processes and tools, including Sentry and New Relic, also lowered our Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR), ensuring any issues that do occur are addressed quickly and effectively.

How We Optimized DevOps

Many of our applications have been migrated to Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service) to take full advantage of containerization and horizontal scaling. This allows your app to automatically handle increased traffic without downtime, all while reducing the need for manual maintenance.

For certain applications, we’ve transitioned to platforms like Vercel, which offer faster deployment, automatic scaling, and built-in infrastructure management. As a result, we’ve improved security and increased reliability.

Enhanced Risk Mitigation Strategy

We overhauled our risk mitigation process to ensure smoother sprints and fewer disruptions.

Our team follows a new detailed protocol to proactively eliminate risks as they work, resulting in less downtime and eliminating nearly all critical bugs from our applications.
- Remember: An error eliminated in development is 10x cheaper than fixing it in production.
